Dream in Pastel
Oh, Just a “Styled Shoot”
There’s a prompt when Realm clients book a shoot to describe your shoot in one sentence and Katie Puc simply entered “Styled Shoot.” LOL
This shoot was so extra, that we immediately reached out to give it a featured spot on the Realm Journal. Editorial styled shoots require a high level of imagination and effort—we love what Katie, Shelby and their whole crew created for this dreamy pastel moment. Chef’s freaking kiss babes.
Want Some Tips on Organizing a Shoot that’s this Extra?
We talked to Shelby & Katie, the hosts of this incredible shoot to get some intel on how to take an idea from seed to full bloom. Be warned: it takes work, a whole lotta time and a hell of a lot of passion.
Models Galore
What really stands out powerfully about this shoot is the sheer number of models that Katie & Shelby organzied. It’s been an interesting couple of years, especially when it comes to gathering together, ya know, beyond like 5 people. Seeing so many people playfully creating together just makes the heart beat a little faster.
Moving Into Editorial
Katie and Shelby met via (drum rolll……) Instagram last July. They both have a background in portraiture, and moving into Editorial happened to be on both of their radars at the same time.
So where’d you find all these Models?
We had to ask. After all, we know that every shoot involves some production, and based on the scale of the Pastel shoot there was a lot involved before the shoot date to bring it to life.
When it comes to sourcing models, vendors, etc, Katie & Shelby leveraged existing relationships. By reaching out to friends and past clients, their model list grew exponentially. The response was so well received that they have a waitlist for the next shoot.
“We’re both all in and a little bit extra"
Shelby and Katie’s vision for this shoot seemed to grow and grow as they came across other elements to involve in the styling for the upcoming shoot. They were constantly messaging across Instagram pinging ideas off one another. As a passion project, they actually bank rolled this shoot + their time on planning every piece of the puzzle.
Why Realm
"We can do two shoots back to back and they can be entirely different—no one would ever know it’s the same space”
For Katie and Shelby it was a good ol’ list of reasons. Our assumption was the scale of our venue/studio suiting their needs—but beyond that, it was the support they received from our team in the planning process (eep blushing), the furniture + the open blank canvas—it all supports and gives space for their creativity to flourish.
There were definitely takeaways from their shoot that they’ll be applying to their future bookings:
More Time—setup before models arrive, more time to shoot models, more time for break down
More Organization—so that each model is being utilized as much as possible. Production Assistants are forefront on the wishlist.
More Photographers—with more time and organization, there’s space for more photographers to get in on this action.
More Vendor Captures—with so many incredible people collaborating, they want to further prioritize capture what vendors have contributed to bring this to life.
Relationship and collaboration
Before Realm was opened, we actually were craving a space for relationship and collaboration. Having a physical location that intersects creation and celebration has been a dream realized—and getting to see concepts like this come to life in such a big way is so incredibly energizing for us as founders. It takes it back to the heart of what we’re here for.
Scale for Thought
Height matters. When we first walked into what would become Realm, it was the sheer height of the ceilings that made it a done deal for us. And the floor to ceiling curtain was always on the radar—believe it or not, before the Cyclorama Walls were a must. Shout out to this sexy AF curtain magic that we’ll never be over.
Freedom
Imagination at it’s finest. While Shelby and Katie might want a bit more organization next time around, but they don’t ever want a highly regimented approach for their photographers. And it makes sense—creation needs space to breath. To do something truly meaningful. And you can tell from this shoot that everyone there was alive in creation and imagination.
